Concrete Repair and Joint System Rehabilitation
Hydroelectric Dam Spillway

The Rio Grande provides a natural border between the United States and Mexico. A major flood control dam provides protection from seasonal deluges, in addition to generating power on both sides of the border. The effects of age and weather had left their marks in the concrete spillway below the dam, as well as in the extensive joint system in the structure. The stilling basin in the spillway had also reached a point where draining, dredging, cleaning, and repairs were required.

Jeans Waterproofing of Texas (JWTX) was contacted by the project’s General Contractor to provide rehabilitative concrete repairs to the structure, clean and repair the entire joint system in the spillway, and replace worn joints with a high-performance polyurethane joint system. Additionally JWTX drained and cleaned the stilling basin, removing truckloads of silt and residue washed into the containment structure. The concrete in the basin was then able to be inspected by the Agency’s Engineering Team and a detailed process of repairs to concrete and joints was performed.

The project was performed over a six-month period during the winter months to make the spillway ready for spring rains and summer heat. JWTX successfully completed all the repairs ahead of schedule.
